Does the atmosphere follow basic physics?

The lapse rate of the atmosphere makes complete sense if one puts a scientific mind to it. There are 3 weights of molecules in the atmosphere, the lighter ones form the upper atmosphere above 100km, the heavier ones form the lower atmosphere, and the third is water, which as a gas would be in the upper atmosphere but changes state causing it to return to the Earth's surface. Warm air rises!
